i made heaps of mock model characters for the game that never made it
I made the 6 music tracks for the characters plus heaps of mock music which sucked

I helped Model and texture pac rock - the yellow character
Modeled the floating island + textured and animated it

I've been animating the sinky sandpit puzzle thing, I'm just rendering an animation to put up of it then its gonna get coded up and put into the game
also i made some new music which i will post up
the island is coming along I'll texture it and see how i feel about it when i can see what it looks like, also still doing a tree i had a talk with Ryan about it and i have a better idea of what it should look like.

we've had two meetings every week but i don't think people have blogged about them but we have been collaborating together

but hopefully everything will be ok for Wednesday.

These are the screen captures from the sinking sand puzzle i've been making Jess is fixing the textures on them so they will be dark around the edge ones and lighter in the middle so like a blending effect,
also the lighting will be in between them so when the player steps onto one and stays there for too long it gets lighter as they get closer to the ground, or it could be the other way around i'll have a talk with the group and see what people think

also been getting pictures to model the floating island off
and Jess is doing the tree trunk but i'm doing one as well

i'm going to attempt to put the music into the game but i can't as the charcters arn't playable so maybe when thats fixed i can see if it works hopefully it's not the night before handin

Update_pro3 - the inner anger

So I've been trying to think of things that the characters have to either get passed as an obstacle or some form of game they can do so they can get to the next level

so i've been working on a boulder trap where the player can either climb it or try and smash through it to get either life or something else before they can get to the next zone

i went to go and change the hands on pac rock (batty boy) and Ryan had already done it but it still doesn't look like what Kah was talking about so I'll see if what i do makes a difference

also this hole game is confusing 1 because no one communicates with anyone else 2 certain people don't let you see stuff until the day before we are suppose to show it. and one or two people go and do everything. Trying times ahead maybe i won't put any of my stuff up until the day before its due then see how you all feel

i'm over this game nothing is certain who knows if we will even have a game

Ok so making stuff in Garage band is damn hard and annoying, so what I'm doing is getting open source music, and editing it in garage band so recreate something just so i can have something to start with by the end of it they won't sound like the original tracks at all.

I've been making the music for the game
we are having a meeting today to discuss the storyline for the game so hopefully this will help me on what sort of gene the music will go into
I've been doing some research into video game music and i went back and played my old Sega master system games to see what changes they have through out the game

for our game we are having
one main soundtrack
individual soundtracks for each character

but i think it will end up being splice has the main soundtrack then each other character has its own other wise there is too much going on at once
so five different soundtracks for each individual character when you change into it

research wise: i've noticed the music for most games is only a few beats and very simple so i'm going to stick to three maybe four beats five is a maximum , we still have sound effects and all that as well so don't want to detract from the game.

I had to re do my blender character so i've been doing that
also have made some music that could go with the level, i was taking to steven and asked him whether or not different zones should have different music he didn't know so i will bring it up on wednesday

also i've been looking at the videos from the wriggly's extra ads just trying to get into the concept of cute , something which is hard to achieve after you've just done a level where it was odd and creepy, creepy but in a good way :)

so yeah just trying to do this and other stuff for other papers

So i was trying to seam this model and it went a bit mental so am going to make a new character tonight yay!
um my guy is called swing and he's off splice, he uses his arms to propel his body forward so big long jumps which help him get over certain things.

development wise he is matte yellow has beady little black eyes, at one point had teeth but they got lost somewhere along the way

I've been working on my character but I've had to go back to the wriggles extra ad's to make sure what I'm doing is correct , and what we all want, so my character was originally all bright yellow but i may have to mix it up a bit more and make it look like something more related to an object maybe i dunno I'll post pictures on Monday of what progress i have

i want to have this done by Wednesday hopefully or at least have it looking and rigged by Wednesday but have any little details to fix to be able to fix over the rest of the week.

Mock terrain and characters
terrain is like a keyboard the player has to navigate either on top of the keys or in between the keys , to get to the next zone.

character design, it has weights in the bottom of its body and it walks by thrusting or throwing its body forward and uses its legs to move as one so like a pendulum movement.

So the skybox won't work the background is spastic and its like its mirroring everything i dunno how to fix it so i'm just gonna leave it be

it works properly in unity but when you build and run it it stuffs up

Tid bits and other such things

I've just been doing some tid bits and touch ups on my level
like in the first room, abc blocks for a better effect the room looked really empty and weird, added mesh colliders , i didn't use a sky box as i wanted the main focus on the level so the sky is just black like a black hole

the clown looks pretty scary and weird its pretty cool i think
my character wouldn't walk properly which was annoying so i've put in the first person shooter instead.

everything's up on my blog and soon the game its self will be too.

unity crashed twice on me today, also when i played my game at certain times when you moved around everything tripled and went all spastic but it fixed itself which is good

The Sands of time
crafting a video game story

game design , level design, film screen play is a written blueprint
in a video game its better to do than to watch
to many cut scenes bore and make the player confused if the image sin the cut scenes are different from the game they also make the game heavy and seem like the cut scenes are more important than the game play itself, where as your ant it to be the other way around

making the player work for the reward of turning back time is a good idea, and letting them figure out how to get from point A to point B

simplicity is the key for the player to understand every aspect of the game and enjoy game play even more

making the game play nearly impossible at points is one of the most frustrating things where you do want to rip out the disc and smash it, but it also makes you more determined to get past that specific piece and show your better than that, driving your way through a game and getting to the goal is what makes it all worth it, and of course bragging rights to specific parts

Its cool how narration can make or break a game or movie depending on so many factors the actors voice, the quality of sound, if it will actually work in the game or not

I've played the old game and i loved it the 2d version was fun and also hard because you could get lost so easily on all the different levels or get to a point where you can no longer go and then have to go all the way back to where you were. i think what they did with the new 3d version is good but people are always skeptical when someone remakes anything people sometimes always stick to the old because they just loved it so much, adaption is always needed especially with games which are created and though using other games as inspiration.

So I’ve changed my idea a lot of times but since I’ve been playing with things a lot I can say I’m fine with how it looks and it won’t be changed again

The theme of it is kind of kooky and weird, a circus/wonderland/theme park kind of environment with odd colouring and blinding lights

In the level you start off in a small child’s bedroom then progress out of it into the level
With that drastic change from normal to weird

I wanted it to be like a small child has woken up and is in a dream like state and follows the path along the environment until they wake up

The following are objects I’ve made for the environment
A clowns head that you walk through which is the beginning to the weird world
The child’s bedroom to give off an effect of calm before the storm

Weird TV’s with rabbit antennas and static screens
Park benches, abnormal trees and normal trees
Tree stumps with human legs and a slime like texture
Old weird rusting car’s
Rubik cubes of colour
Two trees one with a dark wood texture and another with green grey wood texture
Candy cane’s one with normal candy cane texture and the other inverted colouring
Old wooden crates

Terrain texture I used four different textures for my terrain
A grass hill which was a preset in unity
Then I made my own in photo shop of various dots and speckles which are to go with the colouring effects

Texture of purple
Texture of yellow
And a dark blue texture with specks of white in it for the main colour

Then lighting using direction lights
With green and pink colouring to give a wear glow and different angle colour when you moved over the terrain

Dark murky water which kills you if you hit it

etc etc.

So far my level is so bright it burns my eyes and makes me not want to look at it, i think if i had a seizure detector it would of gone off at the beginning blown up three times and then died again thats how insanely awesome and colourful my level is , remember its not a real game unless you are blind afterwards.

seriously, good things are happening at the moment building wise and finishing wise, its fun though i think i've been here for 8 hours the past 3 days trying to do this, and i'm nearly done exciting

maybe when my cornea comes back from the burnt ashes on the floor i shall be able to continue.

I've been creating my terrain in unity, and adding my objects made in blender, once all this is done then the scripting will be done

For some reason certain objects I've made in blender won't come in, but others will

unit tron keeps giving me weird errors like certain textures are not the power of two somthing random but i think its because of the image i imported

still tweaking and fixing things, i put my old character into unity so he shows up now which is good....... to be continued

I've tried weight painting the object to see if that is the problem and its not

Blog for 385

I've done my drawings for what is going into my level, I'm just building them all then texturing and then importing them into unity when i get back up north,

I've taken inspiration from Charlie and the chocolate factory,and alice in wonderland

so all up i'm making 19 or 20 objects to go into my terrain which wil be an outdoor terrain, with muddy water huge trees and heaps of random things everywhere like toasters,burn tout cars, bottles, candy canes,tv's, guitars,flowers,finger tree's, a little tea cup mountain,car tires etc just really weird things as its an odd place

the main character will be a little kid in a full pajama suit with a butt flap like in where the wild things are, love that book

but yes i have been doing work, i just didn't have internet access down south, apart from crap weather

drawings wil be up of what is going into the level as soon as they are textured then you can see the drawing, 3d model without texture then textured model

STACKER SITE

Intro
This is a building game where you must find particular pieces and stack them to form a way to escape an enclosed space that is about to be blown up, so you have a limited amount of time to find specific objects that you can use for building this stairway out of the space and to safety,
all objects are movable and stackable but only objects with specific symbols like and X will be a stable object when placed next to another object with an X it will be able to be walked on, where as objects with no symbols will break when walked apon,

a cube with an X on the side will work with another cube with an x on the side but a cube with an x will not work with a cube with an O on the side

the time limit for this game is 5 minutes
the timer gives you 2 minutes to collect objects to stack with, as finding the right ones is tricky amongst all the weird random objects and one's that explode when touched.
then 3 minutes to rotate and move the objects to build you way out of there
but once you've reached the top of your stairway, the timer resets as you have to find more objects to build a wall to protect yourself from the enemy's that re coming to get you.

Background
The scene is set inside a huge box/crate that is about to explode, its bursting with millions of objects everywhere its dirty and looks a little funky, I'm sure as soon as you arrive you'd wanna leave
everything looks old and disheveled as some objects explode some just turn to dust when touched, this place is being demolished for a reason, the reason being the enemy( crasher's) are infesting and are destroying everything you and everyone else has worked for you as a "stacker" you are helping rebuild what there use to be and what there always should be.

Its about having a sharp eye, and figuring out a plan to survive.

So i was looking at images from the crash bandicoot game and well i was thinking and since i have my marshmallow guy who's all cute and stuff why not make a cute game with drastic consciences like mud puddles which are from chocolate so it could be like candy land , that was an awesome board game, so have clouds, and marsh mellow tree's with gumdrop buttons white doves that attack you

so it maybe sort of like you know how American people go hard out for Christmas and have like statues and candy canes and huge Santa's all over there lawns and stuff something like that except with lollies and chocolate bar men that chase you and moving gob stopper balls
sort of like Charlie and the chocolate factory that sort of theme but way crazier.

still thinking about it all sort of going off on a tangent about it .....

Level Design Pro_2

I'm basing my level design off Crash bandicoot from the ps1
I'm particularly interested in the first three levels which are in a forest and how you have to follow a path and as you follow a path into a particular section of depending on the route you take the forest changes either darker, gloomier or brighter and happy but the same bad things may occur , or will they?

i think the path idea is good it gives you something to follow and lots of little things can happen along it,

conventional forest path which they made mine will be no such thing possibly made from old wooden plank like things that move and break underneath you, scary looking trees,

Unity and its like for me

I tried to import my character into unity and yeah it went in a hole half of it so his hair and legs are there but his body isn't but his bones are there

also it doesn't do any animation at all which is so weird because other peoples are going in fine so i think i'll have to remake him as one hole object and see if he will go in that way

but then again the legs were extruded from his body so they are apart of his body so it should be there its so strange.

Project1_End

Weight painting my character was really awkward and hard it wouldn't let me do 50 percent on a certain bit on its lets which would make the legs move smoother i think it must be to do with the mesh because of the way it was extruded and the subsurface

Kah showed me how to stretch my character using the ipo
i also fixed its walk cycle after the keyframes kept messing up for awhile one of his legs would swing really fast and the other would just flick randomly it was strange but i managed to fix it after some tweaking

The textures i finally decided on was a full body texture of handy towel paper which gave it a sort of bubble effect which i think looks more like marsh mellow than the marsh mellow texture which looked like nothing at all

Also the helmet thing, i decided to get rid of it as he just didn't look right at all not even in my drawings there was something just not right

so i replaced his hair with a full head of elvis hair and a little quiff at the front for style points,

rendering my model showed it was still too blocky on his face and not a hole smooth all over surface kah showed me what was going on even though he did look kinda cool blocky he looks better smooth

his legs are still a little weird because of the weight painting not working properly

overall I'm happy with my model

animation wise he puffs in then out and then walks two steps
under 10 grams for sure

So we tryed to get unity to work through tom's log in and it worked but anything i make would overwrite his work so and save itself in his stuff so what can i do ?
my own log in won't work for unity and neither will student student. it says set permissions so there isn't anything i can do really :(

I've been texturing and changing my character and getting annoyed that everything takes so long , for some reason blender starts to slow down which is really annoying
I've changed my character a lot as the certain textures i wanted for it didn't look like anything ,it just looked plain and not like a texture
so the new texture is from a paper towel it still takes on similar characteristics as marsh mellow with expanding but not so much,its absorbent and looks way better
Also the helmet i was going to give it didn't look right at all it just looked stupid so i gave it an elvis inspired quiff at the front , it looks sort of emo at the moment but i may fix it

Animating / rendering frames takes so long , but i think all up i'll have maybe 80 frames so that's going to takes awhile to render, having expanding and retracting and the walk cycle

i was also looking into maybe putting in a sound when he expands but thats only if i have time

Unity Tutorials

Unity is really cool how you can shoot cubes and make them fall using gravity, also it seems to be way less complicated than blender but 'm sure it will prove me wrong

drop and dragging the tools is much easier,

scripting wise it looks the same as flash, hopefully the hole syntax errors are less this time around

i remember Trace and all its glory of finding things but now there's Debug.Log fun times fun times indeed.

I've been watching tutorials for Blender
the one where the guy makes a mouse for his children's book and a sculpting one about a head
and just making alot of nothing look like heaps of nothing

played some GTA because i got pissed of at blender got 6 stars by shooting people whilst on my motorbike a tank and everything killed me it was epic.

so far i've hated blender a lot
we had a lot of disagreements
it has just closed on me for no reason
freezes often

more or less i know why its free

anyway

i've been modeling my marsh mellow thing so far it looks like a ball with stubby legs i've go the texture into blender but am not sure how to actually apply it but i'll do that once i've finished modeling and rigging

also been watching the unity tutorials and looking in the library at level designs

possibly do maybe long grass or something silver and shiny like a bench top with knifes lol

Chronic Logic's Gish

The reason for why Gish is a ball of tar is the best answer 'He just is" you don't need an explanation for why a character is something but generally it helps with the story part of the game to bring the player in more and to make them really want to complete and finish the game

Having two player in games is so much fun and i think it needs to be brought back to all games like way back Sega days, my sister and i use to battle it out playing a commander game where you shoot all the guys who come towards you and as a young girl it was fun because it got my sister and i doing something violent together

Sound i think makes a game all the sound effects and the soundtrack even sets the mood for the game and if something big is going to happen,even though its hard to try and get it into the game a lot of fiddling and trying different things.

I haven't played gish but I'm going to because i want to see what there interface is like and how the physics work and so i can be the ball of tar!!!

I think how people work with other people is interesting and it does help develop people skills and to open up and get different ideas across
I thought this was interesting with how they switched people around so new ideas would flow in the different groups

There first attempt at a game was a failure but they didn't give up ,but took strong points from the failed game and built on them to further the new projects which later on became a huge success
Having there 200 pages on the game and every detail that was put into it is a huge thing but would of helped them out a lot with whether or not things were working.
The stupid ideas that people have and that other people have them to and if you bring them up at a later time they may help or fit in somewhere is actually

getting people in to test play there game so they could see the flaws is a great idea even though they couldn't say anything which would of been really hard being myself i would of yelled at them to go over there or something like that, but seeing where they got stuck and how different peoples strategies when playing a game is a step that would most definitely help
especially with pieces of the game that need things like health or a weapon, even more characters to attack.
